Welcome to the page for Spondon in Bloom 2013. You can find information about previous years here.
After narrowly missing out on top slot in last year's East Midlands in Bloom, the Sensory Garden was awarded the highest "level 5" marks in the "it's your neighbourhood" category (sponsored by the Royal Horticultural Society). This follows the official unveiling of the new Andrew Frost tree sculpture at the opening of the 2013 Social Safari.
Spondon’s own competitions was judged by Dawn Dagley of the Parks Department in July. In the “flowering container” competition this year, first prize was taken by Julie Fajardo with runner-up Anne Smith. The winners of the "Pubs and clubs" competition were White Swan (1st), Malt Shovel (2nd) and the Village Club (3rd). The "shops and businesses" winners were Sitwell Garage (1st) with Browns Hairdressing (2nd) as runner-up.
A beautiful sunny day was the appropriate setting for the official unveiling of the toposcope on Saturday 13th July. The ceremony was [performed by David Orr (on left of photograph), President - Submarines, Rolls-Royce plc, with around 60 guests, including many of those involved with the design and installation of the toposcope.
Preliminary planning is now under way for a "Phase 2" in the park, including an information board and, in conjunction with the Council Parks Department, some wildflower planting.
Sadly, the planters installed for last year's Jubilee celebrations have suffered from repeated vandalism, so at an appropriate time, they will be moved to the park boundary on Dale Road.
