Spondon Neighbourhood Forum and Board
Neighbourhood Board subgroupReflecting the community’s priority concerns, the Board has set up a subgroup on “Safer Spondon” to liase with the existing community Safer Neighbourhood team. They held their first meeting in January and are looking initially at providing help for older members of the community. There has been a “targeted leaflet drop” warning about bogus callers and “distraction burglaries”. They are also looking at publicising available security advice. The Spondon Safer Neighbourhood Team can be contacted on 0345-123-3333. |

Global
warming and the chain down to a local level
Global warming is recognised by a very significant majority of the world’s
scientists as a man made phenomenon. It is caused mainly by the production of
gases during the consumption of carbon based fuels and foods. When they are
released into the atmosphere, these gases act like a greenhouse and stop energy
being radiated from the earth into outer space. As a result the earth’s
atmosphere warms up. It is now accepted by the leaders of most countries as the
greatest threat to all forms of life on earth.
Internationally governments are working together to agree how global warming can be reversed over the next forty to fifty years. Each national government is devising ways that their country can contribute. In Britain each local council is planning what it can do at town, city and county level. Derby is drawing up its plan.
In Spondon your Neighbourhood Forum and its Board have decided to take action at an even more local level. The Board has created a Cleaner Greener Spondon subgroup to encourage Spondon residents to play their part in this vital campaign. As well as being concerned with global warming, the subgroup is also interested in helping to improve green open spaces and supporting initiatives to keep Spondon clean and tidy.
The Cleaner Greener subgroup’s Aims and Objectives

To help Spondon play its part in Derby’s efforts to reduce global warming

To assist people’s understanding of the causes of global warming

To develop people’s understanding of what they can do personally to help reduce global warming

Support for local initiatives
There are only a few people on the subgroup so we are limited as to the number of projects and campaigns we can undertake ourselves. However the Board has substantial amounts of money that it can award in grants to local groups to help with initiatives that they want to undertake. A recent example is the production of Spondon shopping bags by the Village Improvement Committee. These cotton bags provide a sustainable alternative to the plastic ones which use irreplaceable raw materials.
If a group you are a member of has an idea for an initiative which fits in with our aims and objectives it can apply for funding. Application forms can be obtained from , the Neighbourhood Manager for Spondon. If you would like to discuss your ideas before contacting Richard, you could

This started in the summer of 2007, replacing the previous Area Panel structure.
To quote the City Council website:
"Your neighbourhood forum is an open public meeting. Anyone can attend and it’s held at a local venue every two or three months. The forum is your opportunity to find out what’s happening in your neighbourhood - the problems and the successes - and to discuss the big issues and priorities. You’ll have the chance to talk to your councillors, local police, housing, community safety and other providers of services and have a say about what your priorities are for your neighbourhood....
...Your neighbourhood board is a leadership group for the neighbourhood. We realise that not everyone wants to get involved - many people just want to know what’s happening and where to go with a problem. However, some people want to get really involved in their neighbourhood as community leaders, working alongside their councillors and local services. Your neighbourhood board leads on behalf of the neighbourhood as a whole, agrees the priorities, decides where community grants are to be spent, monitors performance and decides on the vision for your neighbourhood."
The date of the next Neighbourhood Forum is on the events page.
